The film not only set new box office records in just 10 days of it’s release, but has also become the biggest grosser Indian cinema has seen so far.
Now that the Baahubali fever has gripped the entire nation, we bring you the lesser seen side of one of it’s most loved characters, kattappa. Let’s meet his real life avatar and how he looks off camera.
Born on 3rd October 1954, the character of Kattappa has been played by popular south actor Sathyaraj, with a real name Rangaraj Subbaiyan. Though Sathyaraj always wanted to be an actor, his mother opposed his idea. But in 1976, despite all oppositions, this unassuming man with innate acting skills left Coimbatore to enter the Tamil film industry based in Chennai.
A major incident that made Sathyaraj have his first inclination towards showbiz was when he got to meet actor Sivakumar and producer Thiruppur Manian during the shooting of the film Annakili. Post this meeting, he joined the drama troupe of Komal Swamynathan.
Sathyaraj ‘s first film in a credited role as an actor was Sattam En Kaiyil in 1978. However, his first film as the leading hero was Saavi in 1985, which was a box-office success. Later he worked as production manager for the film Kannan Oru Kaikkuzhanthai.
So far, Sathyaraj has acted in over 200 films and has also tried hands at hosting TV shows. In an interview in 2015, he mentioned that he has once even played the role of superstar’s Rajinikanth’s father.
Digging deeper into his professional life, we find that Sathyaraj has been married to Maheswari, niece of producer Madhampatti Sivakumar, in 1979. The couple has a daughter Divya, who is a nutritionist and an actor son Sibiraj.
